Typing Instructor For Kids Platinum Review

Typing Instructor For Kids Platinum Review

Typing Instructor For Kids Platinum is typing software geared toward kids aged 6-12. It gets installed on your computer with a disc, and once it is installed, you do not have to put the disc in again every time you use it.

You can choose the age group and level for which you want instruction, or you can choose from a list of lesson plans. You can choose your WPM goals, and you can choose whether you want instruction in English or in Spanish.

The kids learn the home row and are gradually introduced to new keys with step-by-step touch typing instruction. They have a goal of completing challenges and tests that will allow them to navigate all of "Typer Island" and "capture the castle" at the end (once they've learned all of the keys and completed all of the challenges in the five distinct lands they must navigate on Typer Island). Once they reach the castle and become The Ruler Of Typer Island, they advance to The Lost City for still more games and challenges. In the meanwhile, each time they learn new keys, they can practice those keys with various fun and challenging games. This is an entertaining way of review and skill building, and the kids are pretty much guaranteed to have fun with it.

There is also a "Story Lagoon" where kids can practice typing stories from classic literature and fairy tales.

The software stores your progress and always knows where you left off, so the practice games will never include keys not yet learned. As the kids progress, they get "rewards" and between that and wanting to "capture the castle," they have constant motivation to keep going.

Included with the software is:

Over 30 typing challenges
Typing tests
Typing progress reports (WPM and accuracy) and charts
Certificates of achievement
160 lessons
Practice games and activities

Although we aren't very far into it at the time of writing this review, so far it is proving to be effective and entertaining, and my daughter (nearly 11) and I are both very happy with the program. We've had no problems with the software and are seeing quick results. I will update again at some point after she's gotten further into it to let you know how effective it was at teaching a complete knowledge of touch-typing that she could really utilize for schoolwork and so on, but so far it's looking good!

I'm a pretty relaxed homeschooler. We do school around life, not life around school. We use mainly a fun, hands on curriculum that isn't overly time consuming and isn't dry or textbookish, and we're always willing to drop it for the time being if something fun, interesting, or educational comes up outside the house. Living is learning!
